In a heartfelt celebration of bravery, compassion, and determination, Doug Newman has been named the winner of the prestigious 2024 Jessica Ma Award (JMA). The JMA is awarded annually to individuals who show extraordinary effort in raising funds and awareness for Caring Matters Now (CMN), a charity dedicated to supporting families affected by Congenital Melanocytic Neavus (CMN).
Doug’s exceptional fundraising journey included a remarkable 45-mile walk around the Isle of Jersey, during which he raised an astounding £12,330 for CMN. This incredible feat has not only brought much-needed financial support to the charity but also inspired countless others to take action in their own communities.
In addition to Doug’s achievement, special recognition has been given to other inspiring individuals who made significant contributions to CMN’s mission. Joshua, at just 14 years old, undertook two 5K runs while also organizing multiple fundraising events at his school, ultimately raising over £4,000. Sol, only 7 years old, participated in the challenging Iron Boy event and raised an impressive £860 for CMN. Lastly, Diane Bostock took on a 10K run in memory of her daughter, Hannah, who tragically passed away due to complications from CMN. Diane’s effort raised £1,633 and was a deeply emotional tribute to her late child.

The Jessica Ma Award is named in honor of Jessica Ma, whose life was tragically cut short 10 years ago due to CMN complications. Each year, the award is given to individuals who go above and beyond in their fundraising efforts, embodying Jessica’s spirit of resilience and kindness.
In a statement released by Jessica Ma’s family—husband Peter and children Pascale and Jasper—they shared their pride and admiration for all the nominees:
“Pascale, Jasper and I are really impressed with all of the nominees who raise money for CMN by donating their time and resources. We always love to see the determination from younger people such as Joshua (14) and Sol (7) who contribute so much and raise awareness of CMN. This year is the 10th since Jessica’s passing, and we are delighted with so many nominees for her award. We have chosen Douglas Newman as the winner for the 2024 JMA award. Inspired by the research announcement in June 2024, Doug undertook a sponsored walk around the Isle of Jersey. An outstanding effort and an amazing amount of money raised. We would also like to give an honourable mention to Diane, who ran a 10k in memory of her child lost to CMN. We are sure it was an emotional event. Our family, as you know, was touched by tragedy 10 years ago with the passing of Jessica who this award is named for. We look back over those years and see so many children, now young men and women, thriving due to the support from Jodi and the CMN charity. Congratulations Douglas! Well done to everyone and Thank You for your efforts.”

The award serves as a touching reminder of Jessica’s enduring legacy and the continued need for awareness and support for families impacted by CMN. Over the years, CMN has provided essential resources to countless families, and the fundraising efforts of individuals like Doug, Joshua, Sol, and Diane ensure that this vital work continues.
Doug Newman’s walk around the Isle of Jersey was particularly significant, occurring just after a groundbreaking research announcement in June 2024. His dedication to raising funds for CMN was not only a personal challenge but also a show of solidarity with families affected by this rare condition.
As the 10th anniversary of Jessica’s passing approaches, the Jessica Ma Award has become a symbol of hope, resilience, and the collective strength of those dedicated to making a difference. The contributions of all the nominees this year highlight the profound impact of community support and the drive to create a brighter future for those living with CMN.
Once again, congratulations to Doug Newman, this year’s winner of the Jessica Ma Award, and to all the inspiring individuals who continue to support CMN’s mission. Their unwavering efforts remind us of the power of kindness and the lasting impact one person can have in the fight against CMN.
