Couldn’t sleep a wink last night, all I could think about was what the next 12 days may bring.  4 plane journeys (which is bad enough for someone who is scared of flying), sleepless nights in -20c temps, blisters, blister pads, going to the toilet in the great outdoors, altitude sickness, headaches, vomiting and not being able to breath comfortably.  Although these things were racing through my mind I couldn’t help smiling when thinking about the views, the people, the sights (elephants, monkeys and much more), the memories and lastly hopefully the summit of Kilimanjaro. Yesterday Jodi and I went to the GP to get our injections.  To my dismay I needed 4 whilst Jodi only needed 2- one being Yellow Fever which we have to get at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.  After speaking to the nurse for around 30 minutes about the different viruses and/or illnesses we could catch whilst in Africa,  all I could think was “…and I was only worrying about altitude sickness?!”. As we started to run I saw Joe, then Josh, closely followed by my Dad racing pass me in hope of not being the ‘loser’. After running up what felt like Kilimanjaro itself, my legs and head gave in to the challenge as my lungs felt as though they were due to collapse at any second. After stopping to take a huge (much needed) breath and being thankfully greeted by Jodi, who had also stopped running, we looked up to see Joe, Josh and Dad laughing and waiting impatiently for us to catch up. My heart beating 10 to the dozen and sweating like a woman… Read more
